  • Brief Biography

Evangelia Charmandari graduated from the University of Thessaloniki Medical School, as a valedictorian of her class (highest distinction). She completed her specialization in Pediatrics in the UK and she was awarded the ‘Membership of Royal College of Physicians [MRCP(UK)]’. She was further subspecialized in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology at the London Centre for Paediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism, at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and University College Hospital, London, UK. She was awarded the ‘Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in General Pediatrics (CCST-General Pediatrics)’, and ‘Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Pediatric Endocrinology’ (CCST-Pediatric Endocrinology) by the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, London, UK.

She obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Pediatrics and a PhD in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology, which were awarded by the University College London, University of London, in 1998 and 2001, respectively. She subsequently undertook a Postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Endocrinology and Cellular Biology at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD, USA (2000-2004). She also worked as a Consultant in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology at St. James' University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, UK (2006-2007).

Following 15 years of clinical and research (clinical, translational and basic science) work in the UK and USA, Dr. Charmandari returned back to Greece in 2007 having been awarded a European Union reintegration grant. She used this opportunity to establish and develop the Laboratory of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Center for Clinical, Experimental Surgery and Translational Research at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA) (2007-2010).

In February 2011, Dr. Charmandari joined the faculty of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School as an Associate Professor, and became Full Professor of Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology in 2015. She carries out her clinical and research work at the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, First Department of Pediatrics, "Aghia Sophia" Children’s Hospital in Athens, Greece. She is also the scientific supervisor of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Center for Clinical, Experimental Surgery and Translational Research at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA).
